A jack of all trades, master of all. Not quite the right saying, but it’s certainly applicable to this Tax Director position in London, which has a multifaceted focus on corporate tax and private client tax. You’ll be an integral figure in a top 20 firm, looking to progress up to Partner, with all the support you need to achieve this.
In many cases, the route to Partnership is hard-fought, and in some cases, it can seem impossible. Some accountancy practices recognise this and create positions that mix the traditional responsibilities of a tax leader while giving you a direct route to Partner. That is why this role exists.
It’s a pathway that assures promotion if personal and business targets are met. What are these targets based on?
Commercial, technical, and personal attributes are key.
Commercial: Winning, maintaining, and growing the client base is imperative. At this level, you’ll be able to identify opportunities and proactively grow your revenue books. It could be winning bids and tenders. It could be growing service lines with existing clients.
Technical: Having a client base is one thing; having the technical knowledge to back it up is another. At this level, the work can be as complex as it comes, and you’ll likely pick up pieces you haven’t previously worked on. It’s a challenging role, but it rewards you with a varied workload.
Personal: Team management and relationship building. Synonymous with any tax leadership role, and this is no different. From cultivating internal talent and passing down your knowledge so the next class of tax leaders can rise through, to working with other teams within the business to help cross-sell as much as possible. You’ll be a visible presence, leading by example.
Why would you consider this Tax Director role? After all, if you have the experience for it, you’re likely in a senior position in your firm already.
While I can’t specify, I know that many firms change the goalposts of partnership promotions, and I’m sure there are a lot of broken promises. I know that the client base is critical for many. If working with clients ranging from medium OMB’s to £200 million turnover companies interests you, then this will tick that box.
