Senior Manager, Tax Engine (Indirect Tax Technology)

There’s a particular type of tax technology person who’s brilliant at the coalface but has never been let near the actual product. If that’s been the frustration of your career so far, read on.
The business is restructuring how tax expertise sits across its products. Tax specialists have historically been embedded inside implementation teams and consumed entirely by delivery. This role breaks that pattern. It’s the one strategic head who partners with the product team and drives where the core Tax Engine goes next, not another pair of hands on customer projects.
This role does not exist on the team today. You’d effectively be writing the job as you go, working out what Tax Engine 2.0 looks like: content that scales, agentic workflows, and a credible answer to how you compete against the Vertex and Avalara-style incumbents.
You’ll help shape the future of indirect tax technology, from tax engines and VAT/GST determination to AI-powered tax automation, e-invoicing, regulatory intelligence and agentic workflows. Working alongside product and engineering teams, you’ll translate complex indirect tax legislation into scalable, trusted technology used by organisations operating across multiple jurisdictions.
What we need to see
- 15+ years in indirect tax or tax technology.
- Multi-engine pattern recognition. Real experience across at least two of Vertex, Avalara, Sovos, ONESOURCE, Stripe Tax or similar. Single-vendor lifers won’t get through the process.
- A product-leaning background: vendor product team, Big 4 tax technology, or in-house building or heavily customising your own engine.
- Senior enough to set direction, hands-on enough to still get into the detail of a specific jurisdictional question.
- Calm under pressure. Non-negotiable.
Not a people management role. Reports may come with the seat eventually, but that’s not the mandate.
London-based, with a competitive base salary and senior-end flexibility for the right profile. If the pitch above sounds like the role you’ve been waiting for someone to invent, let’s talk properly before any names get mentioned.
