Prepare for your first day at a new job

Starting a new job may sometimes feel like going to a new school. That initial feeling of excitement is a good sign (you made the right choice!) but you are fully aware that it’s going to take some time and effort to fit into a new way of working.

Prepare your pitch.

People will ask you about your previous work experience, why you made a move etc. Have a quick and positive summary prepared!

Check names

Take some time to research the names of people you might meet on your first day. Do some research – visit the company website and LinkedIn company page, and make a mental list of ‘who’s who’.

Dress code.

Get in touch with HR and check the office dress code. Pick your outfit the night before to save time and stress in the morning!

Commute.

Be smart, and check road closures/cancelled trains. Aim to be 20 minutes early.

Keep your lunch/evening free

So you can be spontaneous, your new team may invite you out for a quick welcome drink/lunch/social gathering. Building connections and rapport with your colleagues outside of the office setting can help establish positive working relationships.

Prepare some small-talk topics.

Awkward silences are not cool! Stay updated on recent news related to the company, the industry, or any relevant current events. This will demonstrate your interest in the organization and create opportunities for engaging discussions.

Make sure you’re well-rested

Prioritize getting a good night’s sleep before your first day. Being well-rested will help you feel alert, focused, and ready to impress. Starting your new job with a fresh mind and high energy levels is always helpful, especially with all the new information you’ll be receiving!

By following these tips, you can confidently navigate your first day in a new job and set the stage for a successful start. Remember to be proactive, adaptable, and approachable, as you embark on this exciting new chapter of your career.
