A recent project by Economia, caught our eye recently. In a quest to understand how the role of the accountancy profession impacts on the wider business world the magazine has put together an Accountancy Rich List. The top ten makes interesting reading with a wide variety of sectors represented. Topping the list is Peter Hargreaves, a chartered accountant and former CEO of Hargreaves Landsdown the financial advisory firm. He is worth a cool £2,390m which makes us think his financial advice is probably well worth listening to! Other sectors included in the top ten include online gaming, hotels, transport, retailing, media and telecoms.
Interestingly the list only includes those that have either trained as a chartered accountant or who have another recognised accountancy qualification and shows that the discipline obviously has a large part to play in terms of creating both wealth and jobs.
A quarter of the list trained as chartered accountants highlighting the importance and credibility of the other major accountancy bodies.
So what sectors are worth the most? According to the research, the top five sectors for accountants are general industry, finance, property, leisure and construction. Perhaps unsurprisingly given that the average age is 63, the majority of the list is male with only two women – however one of them, Denise Coates of Bet365 makes the top five with assets of £1.2billion.
Our advice? Keep on with those exams – it could be well worth it!
