Social Talent and getting a black belt in recruitment

Most children, including myself many moons ago, have at one point dreamt of how cool it would be to possess a black belt. Admittedly that would’ve been martial arts related, but now I’m a little older and a little wiser (supposedly), I can hand on heart claim to be in possession of a Black Belt in online recruiting. This is all thanks to Harvey John, Alice Hardy, and of course Social Talent.

What is Social Talent?

Social Talent offers a training platform for recruiters, resources, human resources etc. in which you can watch many industry related videos whilst completing quizzes at the end of each mission. Founded by Johnny Campbell and Vincent O’Donoghue, they came up with the conception of industry experts offering their advice and best practices to both beginners, and seasoned recruiters alike. If you’re a stickler for a pint on a Friday evening like myself, I would recommend the Bill Boorman mission!

Although I’m a firm believer of learning by experience, Social Talent reinforces everything I come across day-to-day and preempts situations I’m yet to encounter. The technical elements of resourcing that are used every day, such as Boolean search and Google X-ray felt like child's play after reviewing their explicitly detailed content on such topics. For me, it’s obvious that Social Talent is useful for recruiters of all levels of experience, but I can’t stress enough how essential it is for a newcomer to the industry.

Drumming it in

What Social Talent doesn’t supply with the package is your very own Alice Hardy! Alice was a Principal Consultant here at Harvey John and also happened to be one of the most attentive and detailed trainers needed to kick start your recruitment career. Social Talent is very meticulous and, if like me, your information retention to loss’ ratio is equally balanced, you need to make a plan! Our team of resourcers and Alice sat down once a week for at least an hour with the aim of the game being to put all we’ve learnt into practice! Whether it be role plays, or showcasing the depths of our searching skills, we covered everything, learning by doing!

What are the next steps?

As much as I would like to think I’m a pro recruiter 6 months into my career…. Who am I kidding? I’ve still got a long way to go! The take-home message for me, however, is that to stay ahead of the field, you should never slow down in educating yourself. At Harvey John this is certainly one of our fundamental morals; the most dangerous phrase in our language is “but we’ve always done it this way” is stencilled over our office walls!

I’m a black belt now, but like any skill, it can easily be lost due to inactivity. Do not get left behind!
