The Harvey John team are pleased to share the very first company-wide newsletter! We’ll be updating our clients, candidates, friends, followers, and anyone else who happens upon our Media Hub with quarterly updates about what’s going on at Harvey John.

This first quarter of our operating business year (July - September) has been extremely successful and eventful! There have been a couple new starters join the ranks, a record quarter, and a record month amongst other exciting updates! So, without further ado, here’s the first of many company newsletters to come.

Team Updates

We’re very excited to welcome to the team Callum McKenna! He’s joining our Commercial Finance team as a Principal Consultant covering trainee to qualified level candidates in Sussex, Surrey, and Kent. He brings with him over 5 years of finance recruitment experience.

Ed Moore has been promoted to Senior Consultant on the Indirect Tax team! He focuses on the Financial Services and Insurance Tax sector and has been making quite a name for himself as a growing expert in his field.

The Tax team has grown by one with Natasha Hutchins! We’re quite pleased to have her on board helping out the guys as a Resourcing Consultant. She’ll be taking on the Professional Services focus of Indirect Tax and we’re certain will make some waves.

Lastly, our newest member is Alexandra Louise! That’s Alex number 3 for the office (we seem to have a bit of a trend going!), and well worth having on board as our Office Administrator. She’ll be the glue that holds all of us together handling admin for the team and much much more.

As you might know, we’re incredibly busy so we’re excited to announce that we’re hiring for more recruitment support. This time, we’re looking for remote recruiters with experience in either Accountancy, Tax, or Legal to join our ranks virtually! Get in touch with David Waddell at 01273 827471 or email davidwaddell@harveyjohn.com.

Training and Development

We’re pleased to share that two of our consultants have not only passed their Black Belt Recruitment Certifications through Socialtalent, but they’re now certified Talent Advisors! These months have flown by with their dedication to training, who knows what they’ll pick up next. Keep and eye out for Alice and Charlotte, taking the training by storm!

Recruitment Advice

There are many pieces of advice out there for candidates and clients alike but one that we want to touch on this quarter involves cover letters. It seems like this is a thing of the past but we assure you, it very much is not! David wrote an ‘Ask a Recruiter’ blog at the beginning of the quarter that touched on this topic. He was asked by a client whether it was the norm for candidates to not write cover letters in support of their job applications. The client had recently advertised a six figure Finance Director vacancy and none of the applicants sent a cover letter.

So, if you take one thing away from this newsletter, it’s to always consider writing a cover letter when applying for a job. It can be the thing that tips the application in your favour, maybe even winning you the job. But, it doesn’t have to be a difficult process. Here are some points of advice to help get you started.

  1. A covering letter shouldn't be War and Peace; be impactful, concise, and find the balance of showcasing your experience and personality
  2. Acknowledge the role / organisation you’re applying for demonstrating your interest in the opportunity; a one size fits all approach to a covering letter won't suffice
  3. Highlight relevant recent achievements or successes that will support your application but leave the detail to the CV; the two documents should complement each other
  4. Give your reasons as to why this opportunity appeals to you; this is your first opportunity to sell yourself
  5. Ensure you have the experience, skills, and qualifications that are being asked for; if you don't, then take this opportunity to give your reasons as to why you feel you should be considered
  6. Check your grammar and spelling; leave nothing to chance

Top ranked blogs by sector

With our Google Analytics account, we’ve narrowed down our three top ranked blogs of the quarter, one within each team. If you haven’t read them yet, don’t miss out and click on the links.
